Overcoming low self-esteem often means going back to where it began. This is the real story of a 44-year-old client at HerSelf Center who struggled to value herself and to set boundaries with her family and coworkers — and who left, in her own words, feeling as if a heavy weight had been lifted. Her name and identifying details are changed to protect her privacy; the session and its techniques are exactly as they happened.

The Challenge: Low Self-Esteem and Weak Boundaries
She was 44, capable, and quietly exhausted. Years of low self-esteem had made it almost impossible to say no — to relatives who overstepped, to colleagues who leaned on her. Saying yes when she meant no had become automatic, and each time it chipped a little more from her sense of worth. She wanted two things that are really one thing: to feel that she mattered, and to protect her own time and feelings without guilt.

Finding the Root Cause on Her Timeline
Right after building rapport, we traced the feeling back along her timeline. She recalled a suffocated feeling — as if what had happened long ago were happening right now. The root surfaced at age ten: a Math teacher who rebuked his students and spoke to them harshly. Being shamed and silenced in that classroom had taught her, without words, that expressing herself was dangerous. That quiet lesson had been running her adult life ever since.
The NLP Techniques We Used
We worked through the memory in stages. The Breath Opening Technique eased the weight of the old feeling in her body, and Future Pacing confirmed the feeling was truly gone rather than briefly quieted. When the same root reappeared with a wave of anger, the Balloon Technique gave that anger a safe way out. Finally, the New Behavior Generator helped her build a stronger self-image — one in which speaking up and setting boundaries felt natural instead of frightening.

The Result
The next day she called to say she felt liberated, as if a heavy weight had lifted from her shoulders. Boundaries that had felt impossible the week before were suddenly available to her — not because she forced them, but because the belief underneath the difficulty had changed.
What This Means for Overcoming Low Self-Esteem
Her story shows something we see often: overcoming low self-esteem is rarely about “thinking positive.” The difficulty usually traces to a specific moment when you learned you were less-than, or that being yourself was unsafe — and once that root is addressed, boundaries and self-worth tend to follow on their own.
There is a reason self-esteem and boundaries rise together. When you don’t believe your needs matter, saying no feels like a risk you can’t afford — so you don’t, and every reluctant yes quietly confirms the old story. Change the belief at its root and the equation flips: boundaries stop feeling like conflict and start feeling like basic self-respect. That is exactly why overcoming low self-esteem works better from the root than from surface “assertiveness” tips — the behaviour changes on its own once the foundation does.
